2014-11 He Cares

He Cares

A friend of mine recently returned from a trip to Switzerland.  He commented on billboards across the country that depict a very tall woman ballroom dancing with a very short man.  Pasted over this humorously uncomfortable scene are the words: “On average, Swiss are 1.71 metres tall.”  The insurance company responsible for the billboard rather cleverly puts the dancers into perspective with the tagline: “We don’t care about the average; we care about you!”

It would be true to say that we live in a world of averages.  Advertisements tell us that, for example, “9 out of 10 cat owners who expressed an opinion prefer it!”  The inference is, of course, that you and I, being average, will prefer it.  However, are we, you and I, just average?

Jesus clearly knew the crowds.  If I were an artist depicting Jesus among the crowds, though, they would be the backdrop, not the centre.  I would focus on Jesus and the boy as he handed over his lunch; on the woman admitting she had touched Jesus’ hem; or Zaccheus up a tree and Jesus, inviting himself to dinner.  And while my picture might include dozens of seeing blind and leaping lame, my focus would be on Jesus touching them one by one.

John chapter 3 verse 16 tells us that God loved the world so much, “He gave his only Son.”   At Christmas, we celebrate the coming of God’s Son, Jesus, as a baby lying in a manger in Bethlehem.  Jesus came to meet the spiritual needs of the world.  Equally, Jesus came to meet your spiritual needs and mine.

God knows the world.  God loves the world.  He knows what we are like, how many we are, where we are headed, and what we need.  He knows these things collectively as He is sovereignly at work among the nations.  And yet – far more than a Swiss insurance company – His concern is not for the “average”.  He cares about you.
